Yesterday, news broke that The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco will voice Harley Quinn in the DC villain’s very own animated series. Today, the first Harley Quinn trailer dropped at New York Comic Con and even though it’s less than a minute long, it gets some pretty effective jabs in.
The trailer has Cuoco’s Harley jovially announcing her new show to the world, only to be met with a sardonic reply from Poison Ivy that no one’s going to watch her show because “they hate everything.” Harley responds by saying that her show will be different because it’s got comedy and action, and that’s when Ivy really twists the metatextual knife:
“I thought we were supposed to make a show that was, like, super gritty and bleak and depressing … You know, like a DC thing.”
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, eat your heart out! In all seriousness, the trailer plays off the whole thing in such a way as to not throw the entire DCEU under the bus, as Ivy’s comments can be read as both a nod to the criticisms leveled at “Snyderverse” movies such as Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, as well as a jab at critics who have written all of DC’s output as “dark and gritty.” Plus, Harley gets a nice jab in at the cancelled Deadpool TV show, so at least the Harley Quinn is an equal opportunity shade thrower.
Anyway, Harley Quinn is set to premiere on DC Universe sometime in 2019. Here’s the official synopsis:
Harley’s adventures after she breaks up with the Joker and strikes out on her own in this new adult animated comedy. With the help of Poison Ivy and a ragtag crew of DC castoffs, Harley tries to earn a seat at the biggest table in villainy: the Legion of Doom.
In other DC news, the latest trailer for the live-action Titans just dropped and you can check it out here.
