Jeffrey Dean Morgan is about to enter his second full season playing the baseball bat-wielding big bad Negan on AMC’s The Walking Dead. While reception to Morgan’s portrayal has been decidedly mixed so far, the actor promises that Season 8 will offer new layers to the character that viewers haven’t seen yet.
“We’re going to start seeing slivers of who this guy is beyond the brutality that we saw in season 7,” Morgan told EW in a new interview. “The most fascinating stuff that I’ve got to do this year is seeing behind the leather jacket.”
To that end, Morgan also hopes that we’ll get to see a backstory episode dedicated to Negan at some point: “I always am hoping that, at some point, we do a backstory episode for Negan, because it’s an amazing story. I don’t know that that’s going to happen this year, but we are going to see enough of him and he talks quite a bit, as you know. So he’s going to reveal some of himself to the audience this year, which is going to be awesome.”
However, just because Season 8 is taking strides to humanize Negan a bit, Morgan made assurances that he’s still not going to be a good guy: “Of course, he’s still going to be a big f—ing dick!”
We’ll get to see Negan’s evolution play out when The Walking Dead returns October 22 on AMC.
