Earlier this month, The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan did an interview with Den of Geek in which he appeared to confirm that his character Negan kills more than one character in the show’s upcoming season premiere.
We reported the story, since the prospect of Negan killing off more than one main character in The Walking Dead season seven premiere is certainly news-worthy, but now Morgan has come out and flatly denied the story, arguing that his comments were taken out of context by the interviewer. Here’s his full statement, courtesy of Variety Latino:
“That’s not what I said. I did an interview with this guy and I was talking about Negan’s arc and what he does in the course of being Negan on The Walking Dead. Instead of talking about the one person Negan kills—because Negan kills a lot more than one person on the lineup. And somehow he pieced that all together in such a way that it turned into the article that he wrote. It was to get people fired up. Negan does kill a lot of people in the next couple of years. Before we even meet him he’s killed a lot of people. Negan’s been around for a long time.”
For context, here’s Morgan’s original quote from that original interview:
“Negan’s not just going to kill one person in [the premiere]. He’s not afraid of bashing in skulls.”
So it seems that Negan will kill more than one character from the lineup we left him with at the end of season six … but those kills are going to spaced out over the next few seasons. It’s interesting that Morgan mentions that Negan will do this over the next couple of years, which means that Negan’s time on the show extends beyond season seven.
The Walking Dead season seven premieres on AMC on October 23 at 9 P.M. ET.
