Marvel’s small-screen heroes are being set-up for a big Netflix crossover event sometime in late 2017 with The Defenders, which will unite Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist against a common threat. Although Daredevil and Jessica Jones have both dealt with some form of supernatural threats so far in their respective series, the more grounded nature of the Defenders would suggest that whatever threat they face wouldn’t be heavily skewed towards the supernatural or cosmic side of the Marvel universe. Well, about that …
According to a new rumor from Screen Geek, the Defenders will be facing off against Mephisto, an extremely powerful immortal demon:
“Marvel is talking about setting Mephisto as the prime antagonist for The Defenders. Some may say that this villain wouldn’t fit the TV shows but that’s why they’re incorporating Iron Fist – to set up the supernatural element.”
So yeah, the Defenders could be going up against the Devil. While this rumor seems a little far-fetched, given that Mephisto is pretty far out of their league, it’s also important to remember that Netflix is rumored to be developing series based on Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, and Blade, so there could be room for Mephisto in all of this. Plus, it could be one of those cases where Mephisto is controlling everything from the shadows and our heroes never actually physically fight him. Daredevil is awesome, but we have a hard time buying him punching the Devil in the face.
The Defenders is still a ways off, but we’ll start seeing and hearing more about it as the Luke Cage and Iron Fist shows get released over the next year, so who knows? Maybe Mephisto is the big bad.
