Ricky Gervais Defends Making “Transphobic” Joke About Caitlyn Jenner At Golden Globes

If you’re like me, Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards might have been the highlight of the entire night. In fact, I totally turned it off after that and watched a movie. But that’s not the point.

Over-sensitive Tumblr users and social justice warriors everywhere were extremely upset that Gervais dared to poke fun at Caitlyn Jenner, who famously (and quite publicly) transitioned from male to female in 2015, shedding her old moniker of Bruce in favor of a more feminine name.

When talking about his previous stints as Golden Globes host, Gervais told the crowd of celebs that he was planning to be nicer this year:

“I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course. What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can ya?”

Prior to revealing her new name and look, Jenner was involved in a car crash where one person was killed. Multiple lawsuits are still pending as a result of the accident and South Park, a show not known for showing restraint, famously featured an animated Jenner running over multiple pedestrians in their most recent season.

Naturally, people were quick to call out Gervais for his “transphobic” joke.

Well, it should probably come as no surprise that Ricky Gervais does not give a f**k that people are offended. After a couple of days, Gervais took to Twitter himself to defend his comments and basically call everyone a whiner.

So if you were one of those people offended by Gervais’ comments, we have some advice for you: don’t tune in next year — after all, Gervais said he’s already been asked to host again next year.
