It may seem hard to believe, but Game of Thrones will soon be at an end, with HBO’s popular fantasy series set to wrap up in 2018 (most likely before George R.R. Martin is able to get his next book out). That being said, as one of HBO’s most successful TV series ever, there has been widespread speculation that the network is considering some sort of Game of Thrones spinoff to keep the Westeros train rolling, but now it’s looking like they’re leaning most towards developing a prequel.

As HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys tells EW, a Game of Thrones prequel would arguably make more sense to develop than a different sort of spinoff:

“A prequel feels like it has less pressure on it [than a spin-off].[Author George R.R. Martin’s history of Westeros] gives you areas in which to say to a writer, ‘If you were going to do this, then go flesh it out,’ and we’ll see what comes back. But I don’t feel any pressure that we have to have something.”

With season 6 having already explored events from the past — not to mention that the history of Westeros is ripe with possibility for multiple prequel series, let alone just one — it makes sense that HBO would be looking to set a new series before the events of Game of Thrones, with the events of “Robert’s Rebellion”  in particular offering an obvious jumping off point. Still, HBO isn’t ready to announce any firm plans as of yet, so until then we’ll just have to speculate as to whether Martin will be able to finish his last two books before the prequel series reaches its last season.
