Remember Daario Naharis? Actually, there was two of him. Never mind though, because neither of them are coming back.
A lot of fans theorized that Daario, who was Daenerys Targaryen’s lover and also the leader of the Second Sons mercenary group back in Season Three, would return in the final season of Game of Thrones as the leader of the Golden Company. If you recall from the end of Season Six, Cersei and Jaime Lannister plan to enlist the services of the Golden Company, a large mercenary army based in Essos, in their war against the combined Targaryen/Stark forces. In fact, Cersei has already sent Euron Greyjoy and his massive fleet of ships to fetch them.
A new casting detail debunks the theory that Daario will come along for the ride, though. Watchers on the Wall reports that German actor Marc Rissmann is joining the show as Harry Strickland, the leader of the Golden Company in the Song of Fire and Ice book series. So it’s unlikely that Daario will be a part of the final season, whenever it eventually airs.
Daario made his Game of Thrones debut in Season Three, then played by actor Ed Skrein. In Season Four, the character returned but was now played by Michiel Huisman. Viewers last saw Daario when Daenerys ordered him and the Second Sons to stay behind in Meereen while everyone else sailed to Westeros for the climatic final power struggle over the Iron Throne.
So, to recap: The Golden Company are coming to help Cersei, not the Second Sons. Daario is not the leader of the Golden Company, some bloke named Harry Strickland is. Daario will probably never be seen again. Which is kind of sad, but we’ll get over it.
