Back in February of this year, news came that Martin Scorsese’s Best Picture-winning film The Departed was being adapted for television. Not much was revealed about it at the time other than that it wouldn’t be a sequel or prequel to Scorsese’s film, but now a few new details have emerged.
Variety reports that the project will be a joint venture between Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios. A brief plot synopsis has also been released:
“The new spin on Departed revolves around a young cop who infiltrates a Latino gang in Chicago and battles the gang’s own plant in the police department. Like Departed, the series adaptation is also inspired by the 2002 Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs.”
While that synopsis doesn’t offer too much to go on at this point, it sounds like The Departed is going a similar route as Noah Hawley’s critically-acclaimed FX series Fargo—an anthology series inspired by the tone and style of the Coen Brothers’ 1996 film of the same name. Seeing as how Fargo is one of the best TV series on the market, there are certainly worse models The Departed’s producers could try and replicate.
Unfortunately, there is no word on when The Departed may arrive on Amazon, but it’s good to know that the project seems to be moving along nicely.
