Marvel’s Netflix ‘Punisher’ Series Could Be Arriving In 2017

Marvel and Netflix currently set to continue their pace of two shows a year with Iron Fist and The Defenders both set to hit the streaming service sometime in 2017, but a new report claims that The Punisher spin-off will also arrive next year.

Heroic Hollywood picked up on a Reddit post that went up yesterday containing a screenshot from the Netflix app. The screenshot is of Netflix’s recently updated queue, which contained an entry for Marvel’s The Punisher, complete with a 2017 release date and even a quick synopsis:

“After the murder of his family, Frank Castle is both haunted and hunted. In the criminal underworld, he’ll become known as the The Punisher.”

This is likely a placeholder for the upcoming Netflix series and although it certainly looks legitimate, the 2017 release date seems unlikely. At the Television Critics Assocation (TCA) winter press tour earlier this year, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said that there was no goal to put out more than one or two Marvel series a year.

Of course, things may have changed after Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of The Punisher was so well-received in Daredevil season two, but considering how “long production times and long post times” each of these series have, it seems unlikely that The Punisher will come out in 2017. We also know that the second season of Jessica Jones isn’t going into production until after The Defenders wraps up, and that season isn’t expected until 2018, so it’s hard to see The Punisher making a 2017 window unless it starts filming at the same time as The Defenders (which is certainly possible). That being said, we sure wouldn’t be upset if this report turns out to be true!
