The Disney-owned network Freeform is developing its first TV series based on a Marvel Comics property.
As reported by Variety, Disney has greenlit an adaptation of “Cloak and Dagger,” the romantically-involved superhero duo who have appeared in other Marvel Comics series such as ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘X-Men.’
Centered on a romance between Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teens with remarkable powers (she can emit light daggers, he can engulf people in darkness), Cloak and Dagger’s younger-skewing subject matter is one of the main reasons why Freeform picked the series up, as the network’s target demographic falls into the 14-34 camp.
With Freeform being a smaller network than something like ABC, which produces other Marvel shows such as Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter, Cloak and Dagger won’t have quite as a high a budget as the former shows, but also won’t have to draw in as high of ratings, which is probably a smart move on Disney’s part.
Cloak and Dagger currently does not have a writing team or expected production date
