Jeff Daniels Revives Will McAvoy From ‘The Newsroom’ For An Epic Rant on Upcoming U.S. Election

We miss The Newsroom. While it wasn’t always perfect, the now-defunct HBO series featuring Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy, the uncompromising anchor of fictional news channel ACN, was entertaining and smartly written. Then again, it was created and written primarily by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, The West Wing, Moneyball), so of course it was.

The show is mostly known for it’s opening scene, in which McAvoy answered the question “why America is the greatest county in the world?” with an epic rant about how it’s actually not even close to being the greatest country in the world. You’ve probably seen it in your Facebook feed or on the front page of Reddit every six months or countless other places where videos go viral.

Now McAvoy is back. Kind of. Daniels recently appeared on Bloomberg Televisions With All Due Respect with hosts Mark Halperin and John Heilemann to discuss the upcoming U.S. presidential election, which seems likely to be between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. When he was asked what makes Trump the “best-case scenario” for Clinton’s chances at the White House, Daniels transformed into full McAvoy mode, complete with dramatic music in the background.

Welcome back, Will McAvoy. Even if it was only for a few fleeting minutes.
