English actor Ian McShane, who is set to play an unknown character in the upcoming sixth season of Game of Thrones, made an appearance on BBC Breakfast this morning, where he proceeded to start dropping tantalizing clues about the show’s highly secretive next season.
While he didn’t technically spoil anything, he did mention that his character would be instrumental in bringing another character back: “My character really is like an ex-warrior who’s become a peacenik. I bring back a much-loved character who everybody thinks is dead.”
The knee-jerk reaction is to assume that McShane is talking about Jon Snow, the erstwhile Lord Commander of Castle Black who was last seen lying in a pool of his own blood after being stabbed repeatedly by his own men. Thanks to a popular (though unconfirmed) fan theory though, it looks like the character McShane is probably talking about is none other than Sandor “The Hound” Clegane!
The book theory goes that Clegane didn’t actually die at the end of A Storm of Swords, but instead was nursed back to health by a man called the Elder Brother, a knight who fought for House Targaryen during Robert’s Rebellion who spent the intervening years living in solitude on Quiet Isle. That description at least sounds quite a bit like the character McShane describes.
You can watch an examination of this theory in the video below. We’ll find out whether it holds true or not when Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24.
