In probably the most shocking news to come out of the show Westworld this week, we have learned that the show wasn’t already set for a second season weeks ago, as the official word only came down from HBO today that the sci-fi drama about a Western theme park staffed by robots and run by Anthony Hopkins has indeed been renewed. A possible reason why HBO took so long to make the decision has to do with another one of their ‘prestige’ dramas, Vinyl, which HBO originally gave a quick second season order, only to end up cancelling the show after just one. Given the price tag of your average HBO show, it only makes sense to ensure that you’ve got a surefire hit on your hands before moving forward, and fortunately, that seems to be the case with Westworld. The downside of this announcement is that, thanks to the epic scope of the show and its convoluted storylines, it is unlikely that the next season will be ready to air until 2018, giving viewers over a year to create even more crazy theories. The delay is likely also partially due to the fact that Game of Thrones, HBO’s other massive hit, won’t be airing until much later in the year than the previous seasons, and moving Westworld to 2018 will give the two shows some breathing room.
