TV audiences know that unless a character is explicitly shown dying on screen, there’s still a chance that character may be alive (although with all the debate surrounding Jon Snow’s fate, even corpses aren’t taken at face value anymore). Game of Thrones is generally pretty good at not leaving the fate of its characters up for debate, as most of the deaths are pretty explicit, not to mention violent.
However, there have been a few characters who have only suffered implied deaths, leading fans to hold out hope that they miraculously survived. One such character is Syrio Forel, Arya Stark’s sword/dancing master from Season 1. When last we saw Syrio, he was holding off a room full of heavily armed Lannister guardsmen and looks quite done for, but some people, including Arya herself, Maisie Williams, have held out hope that Syrio somehow made it out alive.
Alas, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss put a firm end to that speculation by reportedly telling Williams “No, he is dead.” Understandably, Williams was disappointed by the news, despite the fact that her character already assumed Syrio was dead:
“I was like, ‘Oh, okay.’ So that put that to bed really quickly, but I guess we can all still dream.”
Yes, yes we can. Goodbye Syrio; no one could do more damage with a wooden sword than you.
