Well, that didn’t take long. The Game of Thrones season six finale notably confirmed the identity of Jon Snow’s mother as Lyanna Stark and suggest that his father was Rhaegar Targaryen but never actually confirmed it. We know that Jon’s birth name was likely Jaehaerys, which would confirm that he is a Targaryen, but since we never actually hear what Lyanna whispers to Ned, we couldn’t say for certain that Rhaegar was the father.
Thankfully, HBO has gone ahead and made things official with this infographic that was uploaded to the Making Game of Thrones blog.
As you can see, Jon’s “Parent’ line connects to none other than Rhaegar Targaryen, who up until this point has only been mentioned in passing by other characters, such as the following exchange between Littlefinger and Sansa from season five: “I remember the girls laughing when he took off his helmet and saw that silver hair. How handsome he was,” he said. “Until he rode right past his wife Elia Martell, and all the smiles died. I’ve never seen so many people so quiet. He rode past his wife and he lay a crown of winter roses in Lyanna’s lap. Blue with frost. How many tens of thousands had to die because Rhaegar chose your aunt?” Sansa’s response: “Yes, he chose her. And then he kidnapped her and raped her.”
Could we be seeing this relationship fleshed out in flashbacks next season? It seems odd that the show would even bother to reveal Jon Snow’s parentage at this point if it wasn’t important and with renewed focus on Rhaegar, it’s likely that we’ll get to see “The Last Dragon” in a flashback before long. Something tells us that Sansa is a little off the mark with those rape allegations.
