The most recent season of Game of Thrones got a lot of mileage out of sibling feuds, with the one between sisters Sansa and Arya Stark being the most prominent (and controversial) of the bunch. Thankfully, they were able to patch things up and dispatch a common enemy in the process, but that doesn’t mean that familial woes are over for the Stark clan.
Sansa’s frustrations with her half-brother Jon (actually her cousin) was a point of contention all season-long, as the eldest Stark daughter was left in charge of the North as Lady of Winterfell while Jon sailed off to hang out with his aunt Daenerys. Cersei Lannister has pledged her forces to our cause, as has Daenerys Targaryen. And if we survive this war, I have pledged our forces to Daenerys as the rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. We are both coming to organise the defence of the realm.
Jon Snow. Warden of the North.
Obviously, Sansa doesn’t know the full details about Jon’s trip south, which is part of the reason why she can’t comprehend why her “brother” would not only ally himself with a Targaryen, but declare said Targaryen as his queen. Still, just look at how that note is worded and try to imagine how frustrating it must be for Sansa to not even have been consulted first. Jon offers no apology or explanation for his actions. And setting aside the question of whether Sansa even wants to be Queen in the North or not, the fact that Jon has renounced his title and is now “Warden of the North” signals a huge chance for all the Starks. Imagine how upset the other northern houses are going to be when they find out not only that their king isn’t a king anymore, but that they all must now swear allegiance to a queen they’ve never met before.
In other words, Jon is probably going to get the cold shoulder from everyone when he returns to Winterfell next season … but at least he’ll have his aunt to keep him warm (heyo!).
