‘Game of Thrones’ Could Finish With Even Shorter Seasons

It’s already tough being a Game of Thrones fan, since seasons are only 10 episodes long before we all settle into a almost 12-month mourning period as we wait for new ones. But upcoming seasons could be even shorter, according to showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the two discussed how many hours they would need to conclude the story, and seem to have settled on a magic number of 73 total hours. For those counting at home, there have already been five seasons of 10 episodes, for a total of 50 hours. When season six concludes later this year, the number will be up to 60. That leaves only 13 hours for seasons seven and eight.

“We’ve known for several years now how many hours, roughly, we want it to go,” Benioff tells EW. “It hasn’t changed.”

That means that next year’s season seven could only contain seven episodes, and the eighth and final season would only have six. For die hard fans of the hit fantasy series, that hardly seems like enough to satisfy.

Even more interesting is that it’s an almost certainty that the hit HBO show will conclude long before author George R.R. Martin gets around to releasing the final two books in the series — The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. Of course, HBO could change these plans considering how much of a smash success Game of Thrones is for the network. It is their most popular series by far, and regularly cleans up at the Emmy Awards.
