According to a report by Variety, the producers of hit AMC zombie drama The Walking Dead made a conscious decision to tone down the graphic violence in the show after severe fan backlash to the season seven premiere. According to executive producer Gale Anne Hurd, after looking at the incredibly negative feedback that the gruesome death scenes of both Abraham and Glenn received, the producers made several adjustments to episodes that were still filming, cutting down on the level of violence going forward.

“This is not a show that is torture porn.” said Hurd, who also added that the strong reaction to the season premiere showed how much fans actually do care about the show, which remains a ratings success for AMC (although not as much of one this year, as ratings, while still very strong, have plummeted from last season’s massive high following the controversial first episode).
