Ed Sheeran Explains Why His Game Of Thrones Character Should Have Been ‘Brutally Murdered’

Game of Thrones has featured a number of surprise cameos over the years — for instance, did you spot the guys from Coldplay at the Red Wedding? — but pop star Ed Sheeran’s guest appearance in last season of the HBO series had casting stunt written all over it. In retrospect, Sheeran’s cameo wasn’t terribly distracting, as he played a likable Lannister soldier with a penchant for singing whom Arya meets on the road to King’s Landing. The biggest surprise of all was that Sheeran’s character escaped his scene unscathed, as Arya has a habit of murdering people, especially anyone associated with the Lannisters. As far as we know, ol’ singin’ Ed is still out there selling out taverns around Westeros and Sheeran isn’t necessarily happy about it.

Speaking with Buzzfeed while playing with kittens this week (D’aww!), Sheeran revealed where he thinks his Game of Thrones character might be now … and that he probably should have just died already.

“I know what Game of Thrones fans hoped happened to my character. I’m sure they think my character got brutally, brutally murdered, but I think my character is still out there. I think he’s chillin’. It was fun being in Game of Thrones, but I definitely think they should’ve killed me off in the episode. I reckon that probably would’ve been the redemption for people that didn’t like it.”

So rejoice, all you Sheeran haters: Ed agrees with you that his character should have gotten a needle through the eye, courtesy of Arya Stark. You never know, maybe HBO will bring him back one last time, just to have a dragon eat him or something.
