Ed Harris Teases Future of ‘Man in Black’ in ‘Westworld’ Season 2

As Season One of Westworld came to an end with an army of now-sentient Hosts closing in the Delos Board of Directors, including William aka Man in Black, one our lingering questions was simply who will survive?

William was seen taking a bullet in the arm, which actually seemed to make him smile. He has spoken all season about finding the center of the Maze, the “last level of the game,” one where the stakes actually mattered. While the Maze turned out to be a quest for Delores, and not for William like he had hoped, the Man in Black looks to have gotten his wish anyway.

Ed Harris, who brilliantly portrayed the Man in Black, recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about what the Host rebellion might mean for his character in Season Two.

“I think it’s more him wanting to play this game on extreme mode. He wants to find out what he’s about. He wants to find out if, in fact, these people are lethal, how’s he going to deal with that? How’s he going to face that? And we’ll see. I don’t know exactly what’s going to be going on in the second season, but I’m sure it’s going to be wild.

It’s probably the most excited he’s been [when he’s shot]. I mean, he’s pretty happy when he’s in that little Mexican village and he tells Lawrence, “This is what I come here for.” And he has a big smile on his face. Then he blows about 10 people away. He was pretty happy at that point too (laughs.) But this is a little bit more. This is deeper. The game’s starting now. Let’s see what happens.”

Unfortunately, Harris didn’t reveal for sure whether he would be back in Season Two when it finally arrives in 2018. He may not even survive the Host rebellion in the wake of Dr. Ford’s death. However, the entire interview is a great read about the Man in Black, and the desires and motivations of his character. We highly recommend you read it all.
