Amazon’s planned five season, $500 million The Lord of the Rings TV series will reportedly focus on the adventures of a young Aragorn, son of Arathorn.

This rumor comes from reliable Tolkien rumor source The One Ring, which tweeted that multiple sources have confirmed the new series will start out centered around the life of the future king of Gondor.

This is … actually a pretty good idea. Those only familiar with Viggo Mortensen’s version of the character from Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy may not realize that Aragorn was already an old man by the time we catch up with him in The Fellowship of the Ring and that his life actually covers a wide range of interesting stories across Middle-Earth. Considering the only thing we’ve really known about Amazon’s new show up to this point is that it would be a prequel series of sorts, this rumor would fit in with that direction.

Amazon has not yet commented on the report.

While we’ll have to wait until late 2019 at the earliest to see Amazon’s TV series, you can get your Lord of the Rings much sooner with a new book focusing on the fall of Gondolin, which is set for release later this year.
