The Lord of the Rings isn’t the only famous fantasy property getting a television series from Amazon Studios, as a new series based on Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time has officially been greenlit.
The one-hour action fantasy adaptation will see Rafe Judkins (Chuck, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) serve as showrunner, as well as lead writer. Judkins had previously teased his first script in a tweet.
Per Amazon, “The Wheel of Time is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. Meaning that in this series — women hold the keys to power. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the ‘Aes Sedai’ as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine’s interested in these five because she believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it.”
The Wheel of Time has sold more than 90 million copies worldwide, spanning fourteen books written by the late Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, who wrote the final three books after Jordan’s death in 2007. Sharon Tal Yguado, Amazon’s Head of Event Series, says that the studio is aware that this is an ambitious undertaking but that they’re up for the challenge. “Developing and producing Robert Jordan’s beloved fourteen-books-series for TV is a big undertaking, and we don’t take it lightly. We believe that Rafe’s personal connection to the material and soulful writing will resonate with the book’s passionate fans.”
The Wheel of Time is still a long way off, as no release date has been announced and no actors have been cast. We’ll have more on this series as it develops.
