WWE Smackdown Live! Match Results – August 23rd, 2016

With SummerSlam now in the rear-view mirror, Smackdown Live! has a lot of work ahead of it and not a lot of time, as the first Smackdown-exclusive Pay Per View, Backlash, will take place in just under three weeks! Could the show maintain its run of decent shows? We’ve got all the important results from this week’s show for your convenience!

Live from Uncasville, Connecticut

In the cold open, AJ Styles declared to the locker room that he is the new “Face That Runs This Place”, donning Cena’s abandoned sweat band from SummerSlam, and mocked a despondent Dolph Ziggler, who attacked him. The two were quickly separated.

It looks like Smackdown now has a modified version of the set used at SummerSlam, including the LED ringposts and gray barricades.

The new Smackdown Tag Team and Women’s Title belts were unveiled, with all of the brand’s women and tag teams in the ring. The Smackdown Tag Team one is a silver version of the WWE Tag Team belts, with blue straps. The Smackdown Women’s Championship is another copy of the existing one, with a white strap and a blue backing on the main plate instead of red. The first SD Women’s Champion will be determined by a Six-Pack Challenge Match at Backlash, while there will be a tournament for the SD Tag Team Titles, with the finals at Backlash as well.

Heath Slater interrupted this announcement and demanded a shot at some gold. It was pointed out that he is neither a woman nor a tag team, so he guaranteed he would have a partner. It was agreed that if he could find a partner by the end of the night, he could compete in the tournament, but he had to win the entire thing to earn a contract.

Next, AJ Styles interrupted to mock the entire thing, but was ambushed by Dolph Ziggler. They were once again separated.

– Becky Lynch d. Alexa Bliss (submission, Disarmer)

Natalya and Naomi were on commentary for this match. They said nothing of consequence.

– The Usos d. The Ascension to advance in the Smackdown Tag Team Title Tournament (Jimmy pinned Viktor, Top Rope Splash)

AJ Styles cut a promo to remind everyone that he pinned John Cena at SummerSlam. He also offered to be a new hero for all the disappointed Cena fans, which is quite generous of him, actually. Dolph Ziggler once again tried to get his hands on Styles, so Daniel Bryan put them into a match. If Styles wins, he faces Ambrose at Backlash for the WWE Title one-on-one. If Ziggler wins, it becomes a Triple Threat match. Kind of a no-lose proposition for Styles, but okay.

Carmella vs Nikki Bella never took place, as Carmella attacked Nikki during a pre-match in-ring interview, working over Nikki’s surgically repaired neck and hitting an X-Factor. Presumably, that counts as a double turn, right?

Randy Orton came out to show off his ten new forehead staples. He was interrupted by Bray Wyatt, who claimed that Orton was just a man, while Bray was a god, and gods never die.

Heath Slater found his tag team partner, in the form of Rhyno.

– American Alpha d. Breezango to advance in the Smackdown Tag Team Title Tournament (Gable pinned Breeze, Grand Amplitude)

– AJ Styles d. Dolph Ziggler (pinfall, Styles Clash)

Dean Ambrose was on commentary for this match, and was confronted by Styles afterwards.
