In addition to announcing their first live event in China in several years, and a new partnership to broadcast Raw and Smackdown in Mandarin, WWE also announced the signing of Chinese wrestler Bin Wang to an NXT developmental contract. The 22-year old wrestler, who is listed at 6’3″ and 220 pounds, had previously competed in the Inoki Genome Federation in Japan. Wang had this to say about signing with WWE:

“It is an honor to be the first-ever Chinese talent in WWE history. There are no fans in the world that show the same passion as the WWE Universe, and I look forward to training and developing my skills so I can perform for them in the future.”

This marks a watershed moment in WWE’s attempt to expand their business into China, a massive, largely untapped market for many interests, including pro wrestling. Recent years have also seen the first video game consoles and North American movies officially released in China. WWE likely hopes to see financial success similar to what occurred when they made a serious push at expanding into India over the last few years.
