WWE Reportedly Releases Joey Styles

According to unconfirmed reports, WWE has released Joey Styles, the infamous former Voice of ECW, who parlayed that into an announcing job with and then transitioned into a front office position. In recent years, Styles has worked as WWE’s Vice President of Digital Media Content, which basically covers and the WWE App, as well as hosting shows on the WWE Network. Styles’ release comes at an interesting time, as he recently did an interview for WWE’s Facebook content where, in between talking about how much he didn’t like the name of the WWE Universal Championship or a 3-man announce table, he responded to the user-submitted question “Why has WWE tried so hard to shove Roman Reigns down our throats as a babyface for so long?” with the following:

“Bottom line is, if our Chairman thinks he sees a future star as a babyface, that’s how things are gonna play out…But the answer is Vince thinks it can work. He’s been right much, much, much, much, much more than wrong over the course of the last 40 years. I’m sorry, but I’m not gonna second-guess the Chairman.”

“Moms are the ones who bring kids to shows. Kids like Roman Reigns. Moms like Roman Reigns. That’s the reason. Just because some people boo him doesn’t mean everyone doesn’t like him.”

The interview was startling in its frank discussion of an “inside” perspective of the industry, and many theorized that it probably got him in some hot water with WWE officials. Whether or not this factored into his release, the end result is that Styles is now out of a job, and WWE must find someone else to run their website.
