Sometimes if you wanna score a flashy overtime game winner, you gotta sacrifice the body. However, crashing face first into the boards probably wasn’t exactly what Evander Kane had in mind on Tuesday night.
Kane played great the entire game, helping his Buffalo Sabres come back from a 4-1 deficit against the San Jose Sharks to tie it up at 4-4, with three unanswered goals in just over three minutes in the third period (Kanes scored the Sabres’ third goal on the night). With neither team able to break the deadlock in regulation, the game switched to the fast-paced, incredibly entertaining 3-on-3 overtime.
Only a minute into the extra frame, Kane found himself on a 2-on-1 with teammate Jack Eichel. The talented youngster fed a perfect pass, and Kane buried it past Sharks goalie Martin Jones. Unfortunately, Kane couldn’t quite avoid tripping over Jones (or the side of the net) and took an awkward fall into the boards behind the net, creating a scene that was definitely a bit frightening.
Fortunately, Kane was able to get back to his feet and skate off the ice unassisted, although he did look a bit shook up. Presumably team doctors will evaluate him for any concussion symptoms before Buffalo’s next game.
