Vince McMahon Is “Open” To Selling WWE (But Not Really)

At the quarterly shareholders meeting yesterday, Vince McMahon was upbeat about the financial state of WWE, especially since the brand extension seems to have done what it was supposed to, by increasing Smackdown’s ratings significantly. But as usual, there was a question about whether or not Vince McMahon would consider selling the extremely profitable company that he turned from a regional promotion into an international juggernaut, and since it’s never a good idea to laugh in the face of your shareholders, Vince answered the question in this way:

“Again we’re open to anything but I think that you know controlling your own destiny is so important. And I don’t know how much you lose control over that you know by being absorbed or sold or what have you, but again, we’re open to anything, we’re business people, so it’s not a question of if the right deal came along, it’s one of those things where if it’s a deal you couldn’t refuse, we’re listening. Otherwise you know we’re creating our own content, which is extremely valuable as George said over all platforms and that’s important. The old ‘content is king’ is true, maybe truer today than it’s ever been. So we’re open for business.”

So, you know, if you could come up with enough money to tempt Vince to part with the family business he built with his own two hands and loves exerting daily control over, and take it away from his daughter, who was raised in the business and groomed to take over from him, and his son-in-law, a former wrestler who worked his ass off to get into his current position of power, then maybe you might convince Vince McMahon to sell WWE. But probably not.
