Rumor: Brock Lesnar Wants to Return to the UFC Later This Year

Here’s a juicy bit of potential news that we definitely would never have predicted.

It’s being reported that former UFC heavyweight champion and current WWE Universal champion Brock Lesnar is (once again) eager to jump back into the octagon and compete in MMA. The first reports come from this Twitter user, who is unverified and seems to be unaffiliated with any known media source. However, he was also the first person to report that Amanda Nunes was pulling out of the main event at UFC 213 due to illness, so perhaps the self-labelled “Proven #MMA Insider” actually knows what he’s talking about.

Lesnar made a surprise return to the UFC last summer to fight Mark Hunt at UFC 200. He won a unanimous decision, but the result was later overturned into a No Contest when Lesnar failed two differnt drug tests. In response, Hunt attempted to sue Lesnar and the UFC for a portion of Lesnar’s hefty fight check. The incident stirred up a lot of controversy, since Lesnar was granted an exemption by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to compete at UFC 200 without going through the mandatory four-month testing phase. The WWE also announced that Lesnar is not subject to their Wellness Policy due his part-time employment with the company.

Lesnar, now 40-years-old, was fined $250,000 and suspended for one-year by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, retroactive to the week of the fight. That means his suspension was lifted on July w15, 2017, making him technically eligible to fight in the UFC again.

The Novemer 4 date at Madison Square Garden is Lesnar’s rumored return date, but that is likely cutting it a little too close to get him back in the drug testing pool for a full four months. Furthermore, recent rule changes demand that returning fighters are in the USADA drug testing pool for six months before competing. It’s possible Lesnar could get another exemption, but that seems unlikely given what happened last time.

Lesnar is the current WWE Universal champion, on their Raw brand. He will defend the title at SummerSlam on August 20, although his opponent is still unknown (it’s probably going to be Roman Reigns though, or a Fatal Four Way with Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman involved). If he does drop the title at that event, a return to the UFC could very well be his next move.
