Report: Manchester United Fork Over £75M to Buy Lukaku From Everton

Manchester United, one of the richest football clubs in the world, is again flexing their financial muscle. Last summer they broke the bank (and the world transfer record) when they paid £89.3 million for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba. This summer, they are at it again, as Simon Stone of BBC Sport is reporting that United have agreed with Everton to a £75 million fee for the services of striker Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku would fill a big hole in the United lineup, as Wayne Rooney’s performance continues to dip and Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered a serious knee injury at the end of last season and was released by the club. Lukaku, who also played for Chelsea from 2011 to 2014, scored 25 goals for Everton in 2016-17. Still just 24-years old, he could become the focal point of United’s attack for the next few years.

United were reportedly also pursuing Atletico Madrid attacker Alvaro Morata, but if the reports of Lukaku coming to Old Trafford are true, it’s unlikely they are planning for another massive purchase this transfer window.

Lukaku was sold by Chelsea in 2014 for £28 million, by then-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who ironically is now the manager at Manchester United.
