Report: Carmelo Anthony Tells The Knicks He’s Not Coming Back to NY

Carmelo Anthony is contractually obligated to be a New York Knick for the next two seasons (making a cool $54 million in the process). However, a recent report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski claims that Anthony has zero intention of wearing the famous blue and orange.

The NBA off-season has already seen a lot of great movement, especially Chris Paul being traded from the Clippers to the Rockets. As every contender tries to establish their own superteam to compete with the likes of Golden State and Cleveland, rumors have been swirling that Anthony could be traded to Houston to join Paul and MVP candidate James Harden.

“Carmelo Anthony has made it clear to them, I want to go to Houston, I’m not interested in talking to you about being re-incorporated back into this New York roster,” Wojnarowski said during a recent appearance on SportsCenter.

Knicks president Steve Mills and GM Scott Perry reportedly halted trade talks with a renewed focus on keeping Anthony in New York. However, it doesn’t sound like their pleas are working.

“So what they’re trying to do … Steve Mills would not have ascended to this job in New York if he wasn’t pretty politically savvy,” Wojnarowski added. “He doesn’t want to get into a public war here with Carmelo Anthony, who they spent over a year trying to run out of town. Houston now is prepared that these talks with the Knicks could run through August, September, into possibly the start of training camp as New York tries to rebuild Melo’s value, and threaten people with the idea that they’ll bring him back to start the season.”

Anthony has a full no-trade clause in his contract, and can’t be shipped to any team without his permission. Reports indicate that he’s only willing to waive the no-trade for a move to Cleveland or Houston, both championship contenders.

Anthony was traded to the Knicks in 2011 and re-signed with them in 2014, on a five-year, $124 million deal. They have now missed the playoffs in four straight years.
