It looks like a WWE Network-exclusive Women’s Tournament, similar in style to the Cruiserweight Classic, is well on the way to becoming a reality, with WWE apparently having already contacted several known independent female wrestlers to participate in the event, which looks like it will take place beginning in January of 2017.
Among the names reportedly on WWE’s radar are longtime North American independent wrestler Heidi Lovelace, first-ever female CHIKARA Grand Champion Kimber Lee, British wrestler Nixon Newell, and a few talents which have already appeared on NXT programming, including Rachel Ellering, Evie, and Deonna Purrazzo. In recent weeks, Japanese wrestlers Kairi Hojo and Io Shirai have been linked to possibly signing WWE contracts, and several female talents have signed developmental contracts with WWE in 2016 but have yet to appear in NXT, including Crazy Mary Dobson. And, we’re just throwing this out there, but NXT Tag Team Champion Johnny Gargano does happen to be recently married to one of the top female talents in the independent scene, Candice LeRae.
If this tournament can have anywhere close to the amount of success as the Cruiserweight Classic, we could see a large number of top female wrestlers swelling the ranks of the NXT and WWE Women’s Divisions in 2017!
