We don’t normally make it a habit of posting commercials on Goliath (except maybe during Super Bowl week). Sure, some of them are pretty clever — funny, even — but we still feel a little bit duped by passing off obvious product advertising as “viral content.” Just because Sprite insists that the latest LeBron James commercial has “gone viral,” doesn’t actually mean it did.
We’re making an exception today.
ESPN has a new show, a comedy of all things, starring former NBA guard Jalen Rose. The series is called Jalen vs. Everybody, but the first commercial for it stars a slightly more famous basketball player. You may be familiar with the name of Kobe Bryant, who shows up in this spot to throw some shade on Rose.
If you’re not sure where the joke was (and are wondering why anyone needs a martini with 81 olives), you probably need to be reminded that Rose was a member of the Toronto Raptors team that famously allowed Bryant to drop a ridiculous 81 points one night in 2006.
The deadpan stare between the two former players is actually comedy brilliance. We would have watched that awkward silence for a couple solid minutes, at least, had the waiter not interrupted.
