One of the dream matches that many wrestling fans have wanted for a while now is Kevin Owens vs. Brock Lesnar. — two tough-as-nails fighters who have a habit of putting on great matches (well, maybe Owens more than Lesnar, these days).
Even though they both exist on the same brand (Raw), and Owens has the target of Universal Champion on his back, Lesnar and Owens have rarely ever crossed paths. It doesn’t help that they are also both monster heels, meaning a match together would offer little satisfaction from a storyline point of view. No matter, though, because it’s going to happen anyway.
On Wednesday, the WWE announced seven matched for their upcoming return to Madison Square Garden, which happens on March 12. That’s less than one month before WrestleMania 33. Although the non-televised show is supposed to only feature the Smackdown Live roster, an interesting “special attraction match” of Brock Lesnar vs. Kevin Owens tops to card. Interestingly enough, A.J. Styles has not been advertised for the event.
Here’s the current card:
-Universal Championship Match: Kevin Owens (c) vs. Brock Lesnar
-WWE Championship Match: John Cena (c) vs. Bray Wyatt
-Randy Orton vs. Luke Harper
-WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: Dean Ambrose (c) vs. The Miz vs. Baron Corbin
-Smackdown Championship Match: American Alpha (c) vs. The Usos
-Nikki Bella, Becky Lynch, Naomi and Tamina vs. Alexa Bliss, Mickie James, Natalya and Carmella (with James Ellsworth)
-Dolph Ziggler vs. Apollo Crews
We all know nothing in wrestling is set in stone. There’s a reason every advertisement has “card subject to change” in fine print at the bottom. There’s also Fastlane, a Raw only pay-per-view, between now and March 12 that could change all these plans. But the thought of a Lesnar/Owens match is salivating. Too bad only a handful of fans will get to see it. Maybe some blurry cellphone footage will leak online for those of us who don’t live in New York.
