In a recent interview, ESPN’s Jonathon Coachman revealed that the channel is currently working on a new 30 for 30 documentary about Vince McMahon’s short-lived attempt to compete in the arena of professional football, the XFL.
The XFL debuted in 2001, at the height of WWE’s popularity, as part of a partnership with NBC. It was presented as an alternative to the NFL, but the low quality of play, blatant bait-and-switch promotional gimmicks, and constantly changing rules led to a product that dropped viewers in alarming numbers. The league folded after a single season, costing WWE and NBC millions of dollars in the process.
