Matthew McConaughey says that he “wouldn’t hesitate” to return for a third season of True Detective if HBO were to make one.

While talking football on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Eisen brought up a previous conversation he had with McConaughey where the actor said he would like to reprise the role if the opportunity came up.

“I hear that all the time now,” said McConaughey. “You said you were going to do season 3. When is it coming?” He added that the “ball’s not advanced at all,” since creator Nic Pizzolatto is “taking a break from it.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the show, McConaughey claims he would jump at the chance to return. “If that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second,” he said. “Oh, I’m open to it for sure.”

True Detective’s first season, which paired McConaughey up with Woody Harrelson as two Louisiana cops investigating an occult-themed murder, was both a critical and commercial hit for HBO, but the second season, which featured an entirely different cast, was widely considered a disappointment. HBO’s former president of programming, Michael Lombardo, accepted the blame for the downturn in quality, claiming that he rushed creator Pizzolatto to write Season 2 “in a very short timeframe.”

Although True Detective is off HBO’s programming schedule right now, the show has not been cancelled, with the network’s new president of programming, Casey Bloys, telling reporters at the TCA Summer Press Tour back in August that the crime drama “is not dead.”

“I’ve talked to Nic about it, and I think both Nic and HBO, we’re open to a third season,” he said. “It’s a really valuable franchise for us. I think both seasons average about 11 million viewers an episode. So not dead. Just I’m not sure we have the right take for a third season yet.”
