When you’re hungry, you should eat, but the key is to make sure you’re eating the right foods. There are some foods out there that might be really tasty; however, they will not satisfy your hunger. After eating them, you will still feel hungry. It’s a pretty tricky situation, especially since many of us don’t know which foods have this undesirable effect. Not to worry though! We have rounded up a list of 9 foods that will only leave you wanting more. Some of these foods will definitely come as a shock, as they have a reputation for being healthy.
9. White Bread
White bread may taste good, but it may increase your hunger. It is processed to remove the bran, which takes away most of the filling fiber content, and has a high glycemic index score. This means that eating white bread will give you a spike of energy, but then you’ll crash and want more. Wheat and whole grain breads are a much better alternative. Their fiber content is digested more slowly, which leaves you feeling full for longer periods of time.
Juicing has become incredibly popular; however, it isn’t all that it is cracked up to be. During the juicing process, the fiber is removed, which leaves just the sugar. Without the fiber, you will get a blood sugar spike, but it won’t last. You’ll crash and then you will feel hungry again.
7. Salty Snacks
Salty Snacks like chips and pretzels can leave you feeling hungrier because they are full of salt. All that salt can cause you to become dehydrated, which might confuse your body into thinking that it is hungry when in fact you are thirsty. Also, salty snacks typically don’t contain any protein or fiber.
Many breakfast cereals are full of sugar and contain very little dietary fiber. As we already know, an excess of sugar will lead to a spike in sugar levels and then a crash. If you want to avoid this, look for whole grain or bran cereals that have at least five grams of fiber and less than five grams of sugar.
Alcohol decreases the amount of leptin, the hormone that makes you feel full, that your body produces. It is also causes dehydration and lowers your blood sugar, which makes you hungry.
4. White Pasta
White pasta is similar to white bread because it is stripped of nutrients and fiber; however, what makes white pasta different from bread is that it is easier to overeat. Overloading your body with these simple carbohydrates leaves you feeling hungry because they throw off your blood sugar levels and hunger regulating hormones.
Sushi is full of white refined rice that, like bread, contains no fiber and loads of carbs. Since you’re eating more rice than anything, it won’t leave you feeling satisfied for very long.
2. Artificial Sweeteners
Research shows that consuming artificial sweeteners, especially when you’re hungry, will make you consume more sugar later. The brain is triggered to expect the energy boost you get from ordinary sugars; however, it is let down by artificial sweeteners. You might be hungrier afterwards because your body is trying to make up for the lack of energy that it was expecting.
Pizza is a combination of white flour dough, hydrogenated oils, processed cheeses and preservatives, which can all throw off your blood sugar levels, as well as the production of satiety hormones and the hunger-regulating regions of the brain. This makes it hard for the body to feel satisfied having just one piece.
