With Halloween fast approaching, now is the time to begin thinking about the perfect costume to wear for the evening. No matter what you have planned, Halloween is always terrific fun and a great excuse to dress up no matter what look you are going for. There are the classic costumes which you can always rely on, but a truly great costume will be current and relevant, and 2015 has been another busy year in pop culture so there is plenty to consider. If you are struggling for ideas, here are 10 costumes which are sure to turns heads.
There are no characters more popular in pop culture right now than the little yellow creatures who exist to serve history’s most evil masters: Minions. Everywhere you turn they seem to be there, and this makes them an excellent Halloween costume idea for this year (particularly for a group of people). You can pick up all kinds of different Minions costumes for each of the characters, and even an outfit for your dog. Originally appearing in the Despicable Me franchise, the film Minions came out earlier this year and went on to become the 2nd highest grossing animated film of all-time. The titular characters are now enormously popular and instantly recognizable, and their comical appearance makes them a great costume idea and one which is suitable for both kids and adults (and dogs, apparently).
9. Mad Max: Fury Road
One of the biggest releases of the year was the adrenaline pumping Mad Max: Fury Road, which proved to be one of the greatest action films of recent times. The obvious choices would be to go as Max (Tom Hardy) or Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), but you could also consider Nux, Immortan Joe or his wives (which would be good as a group effort). There is a particular aesthetic with this film which will take some effort to achieve, but fortunately there is a website that is dedicated to help you pull off what will no doubt be one of the best costumes at the party. There are tips on how to achieve the look of each major character, as well as a shop which contains key items such as goggles, rubber knives, necklaces, sunglasses and buckles.
8. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Another popular film that arrived this year was Avengers: Age of Ultron, and this lends itself very well to Halloween costumes as it features so many popular superheroes. The film was also hugely successful and starred the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Hayley Atwell and Samuel L. Jackson. There are many great costume ideas to choose from, all of which will be easy enough to find, including Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch and many more. In addition to the costumes themselves, you will also want to complete the look with all the proper accessories such as gloves, hammers, shields and wigs. You can never go wrong with superhero characters, particularly when this is a collection of Earth’s greatest heroes from one of the biggest films of the year.
7. Michael Myers
Whilst it is fun to dress up as pop culture references or characters from the latest films, Halloween costumes are best when they are scary. This means that you can never go wrong dressing up as vampires, werewolves, zombies, or any of the iconic horror characters such as Freddy Krueger, Ghostface, Leatherface or the ultimate, Michael Myers. Michael Myers from Halloween is a particularly good one this year, as it was recently announced that the legendary 1978 film will be airing for just one night on October 29th at over 200 movie theaters around America. This is in celebration of both Halloween and the film’s 37th anniversary, and 37 years later there is still no horror villain more iconic than Michael Myers. Additionally, it is also a straightforward costume, as all you need is a jumpsuit, the creepy mask, and a large (ideally fake) knife.
6. “The Dress”
Back in February, the entire internet lost its mind as people argued furiously about the color of a dress. A washed out photograph of a dress was uploaded online, and soon an enormous dispute erupted as to whether it was blue and black, or white and gold. Everybody was weighing in with their opinion, including the likes of Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Anna Kendrick, Julianne Moore and even politicians. What better way to spark conversation at a party than by wearing this costume version of “The Dress”? The original was proven to be blue and black, but this costume version is half blue and black and half white and gold to make it easy to tell what the costume is. It may not be the scariest costume, but it will certainly get people talking and, like it or not, “The Dress” was a gigantic pop culture event this year.
5. The Walking Dead
You can never go wrong with zombies on Halloween, as it can be a way to show some skin whilst also being scary. This is particularly true at the moment, as The Walking Dead is one of the most popular shows around, with the highly anticipated sixth season premiering just a few days ago (perfectly timed for Halloween). As a result, zombies could prove to be even more popular this year, but to pay tribute to the fantastic TV show you could go as the show’s lead character, Rick Grimes (and have your friends as the zombies or vice versa). There are The Walking Dead costumes available, or, alternately, you can create your own through wearing a sheriff’s outfit complete with a weapon for Rick Grimes. And the zombie look can be easy to achieve through torn clothing and heavy makeup (there are many tutorials online that can help with this).
4. Game of Thrones
The biggest talking point in TV this year has been Game of Thrones, and more specifically the character of John Snow. This is who all the men want to be and all the women swoon for, so for single guys this could be a great (but obvious) choice. It of course helps if you have the smoldering looks and black hair of Kit Harrington, but there are many costumes that you can pick up or create to make it clear you are Westeros’s favorite illegitimate son. For the ladies, Khaleesi is the obvious choice, and again it is one which you can create yourself or buy. The hair is crucial, so if you do not have light blonde hair then a wig is essential. As an alternative to these, Jaime Lannister, Ygritte, Khal Drogo, Arya or Sansa Stark or Joffrey (if you are feeling brave) would all be good choices.
3. Jurassic World
The highly anticipated Jurassic World arrived in June, and it’s fair to say it took the world by storm as it became the third highest grossing film of all time, and the highest grossing film of 2015 (Star Wars may well change this). It had been a whopping 14 years since the third installment, but it is clear that this is still an enormously popular franchise. The fifth film is now scheduled for a 2018 release and fortunately not another 14 years away. There are costumes available as the lead characters, Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), or, alternatively, you can buy some brilliant dinosaur costumes for those wanting to go all out. This could also be an excellent group costume idea, and of course will give you the opportunity to recreate the now-iconic scene of Owen and the raptors.
2. Star Wars
It may not be out yet, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens is all the rage at the moment. There is a tremendous amount of hype about the upcoming film (scheduled for a December release) and it has been heavily discussed throughout 2015, so what better way to celebrate its imminent arrival than by dressing up as a character from the immensely popular franchise? Whilst any of the classic characters would work well, the plot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens features new leads and largely centers around Finn, a redeemed First Order Storm Trooper. A Storm Trooper costume could be the way to go, therefore, as it will get everyone excited and talking about the film which looks set to be the biggest of the year.
1. “Left Shark”
It was not Tom Brady, Malcolm Butler, Bill Belichick or even Katy Perry who created the headlines at Super Bowl XLIX; instead, it was a figure that quickly became known as “Left Shark.” During Katy Perry’s half-time performance, she was accompanied by two people in large shark costumes. “Right Shark” was in time and pulling off all the moves, whilst “Left Shark” appeared to have no idea what was going on and was wildly off beat. An Internet sensation was born. You can now pay tribute to this legend by dressing up as “Left Shark” for Halloween, and this of course gives you a free pass to dance terribly and out of time at the party. Smartly, Katy Perry managed to not just shrug this off but capitalize on it, as you can buy official “Left Shark” onesies. There have also been many replications of the actual costume.
