Scott Weiland, former frontman for successful rock bands Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, was found dead on his tour bus Thursday evening.

According to multiple reports, the 48-year old singer was found unresponsive around 9:00 pm before his band, Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts, were scheduled to play a concert at the Medina Ballroom in Minnesota. The show was cancelled and police surrounded the tour bus to investigate.

Weiland has a long and public history of drug and alcohol abuse. His personal problems frequently caused him to clash with other members of his various bands, leading to multiple break-ups and cancelled tours.

Weiland’s body is currently with the Hennepin County Coronor, who will attempt to determine the official cause of death. Initial reports are that he passed away in his sleep, but there is currently no further information.

Stone Temple Pilots rose to fame in the early 90s when they released critically acclaimed albums Core (1992) and Purple (1994). They became one of the biggest bands of the era, even getting booked into an MTV Unplugged special. The song “Plush” won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1994.

The band would break up, reform, and then break up for good in the decade and a half that followed. Weiland would go on to make two albums with Velvet Revolver, featuring ex-Guns N Roses members Slash and Duff McKagan, before eventually his addiction problems led to him leaving the group.
