You’ll Never Guess Which Marvel Role Mel Gibson Turned Down

Mel Gibson has revealed that he was approached years ago for a part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking with The Guardian recently, Gibson was asked whether he’d ever been asked to star in a superhero film and Gibson responded, “Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor’s dad.”

Of course, the role of Odin ultimately went to Anthony Hopkins, who has brought his natural gravitas to the part. Still, it would have been fascinating to see a Marvel universe where Mel Gibson is the Allfather.

Gibson also shared his thoughts on a few other Marvel movies. It turns out that he though the first Iron Man was “good” and “kind of funny” and that he also liked Guardians of the Galaxy. However, he wasn’t as kind to the Spider-Man franchise, writing them off as a “retreat.”

“I mean, you can watch them do Spider-Man five times,” Gibson said. “There is a slight shift in film.” He says that he misses the way films used to be, when they offered “more variety of stories, films, and performances.”

The next installment in the Thor franchise, Thor: Ragnarok, hits theaters Nov. 3, 2017, and definitely does not feature Mel Gibson as Odin.
