You Probably Missed This Indiana Jones Reference In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

Star Wars and Indiana Jones are two massively successful film franchises that are closely associated with one another, thanks to Star Wars creator George Lucas’s close involvement with the the latter and the fact that Harrison Ford starred in both. As it turns out, Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ sound department found a way to throw in a little Indiana Jones Easter egg into the film that you probably never even noticed.

Sound designer David Acord told Nerdist that he added a reference to Steven Spielberg’s 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark during the film’s escape sequence that sees Han and Chewie running away from the rolling rathtar alien.

“Then there’s some other cool things like when the rathtar is rolling down the hallway after Han and Chewie, I put in the sound of Ben Burtt’s boulder roll sound from Raiders of the Lost Ark when the boulder is chasing Indy.”

Considering Acord and supervising sound editor Matthew Wood had access to Skywalker Sound’s entire sound library, it was pretty easy for the pair to not only use sounds from previous Star Wars films, but also ones from other films that were mixed there, with Raiders being one of them.

You could be forgiven for never noticing this reference since the rathtar’s screams kind of dominate the mix during the scene in question, but at least this revelation makes what is arguably The Force Awakens‘ worst sequence a little bit cooler.
