Will ‘Wonder Woman’ Be As Dark As Batman V Superman?

One of the many criticisms leveled at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is that it’s overbearingly dark and largely devoid of humor. While some viewers have embraced the film’s more adult-oriented themes, many saw it as a significant issue that made the film a less-than-enjoyable viewing experience. In light of (no pun intended) the backlash against Batman v Superman’s tonal issues, Warner Bros. has made assurances that many of its upcoming DC solo films will take a more lighthearted approach than Zack Snyder’s film.

If recent comments from Batman v Superman star Gal Gadot are anything to go by, Wonder Woman is not one of those films.

Speaking with Digital Spy recently, Gadot touched a bit on the tone of director Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman and revealed that it will be a dark film with some humorous elements:

“In Batman v Superman, you get a glimpse of who she is but not where she comes from. In Wonder Woman, this would be the first time we ever tell the coming-of-age story of how Diana becomes Wonder Woman. It’s very interesting. It has moments of humor, but it’s pretty dark.”

Understandably, Gadot’s comments may be taken by some as a cause for concern. Wonder Woman’s brief appearance in Batman v Superman is arguably one of the film’s most entertaining elements, so the idea of a grim and dour take on the character may not be the most appealing pitch to those who were burnt out by Snyder’s movie. To be fair though, a dark superhero movie doesn’t automatically mean that Wonder Woman will be anything like Batman v Superman.

Wonder Woman will focus on the character’s origins as a young Amazon princess who leaves her home to fight in World War I. As one of the bloodiest conflicts in all of human history, it makes sense that a film set during WWI isn’t going to be lighthearted fare. Besides, there’s a whole different creative team making Wonder Woman, so even if the film doesn’t shy away from some dark themes, it will probably still look and feel quite a bit different than Batman v Superman.

And if you’re still worried about worried about Wonder Woman not having the right tone, have a look at some of the footage that has been released so far. Whatever your position on Batman v Superman, you have to admit that this looks like a fun movie.
