With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story set just prior to the events of the original 1977 film, there is lots of potential to fill in gaps in the latter film’s story and set up a number of future events. Rogue One promises to delve deeper into the construction of the Death Star and based on what we saw in the latest trailer for the film, there’s a good chance it could clear up one of the biggest plot holes from A New Hope.

As you’ll recall, Luke Skywalker successfully destroys the Death Star after successfully firing a shot into the space station’s one glaring weakness: a single exposed exhaust port. The fact that a sophisticated weapon like the Death Star could be undone by such a glaring design flaw has been a running joke among for Star Wars fans for years now, but as Nerdist News points out, this flaw could have been put in there deliberately.

The new Rogue One trailer introduces us to Mads Mikkelsen’s Galen Erso, a brilliant scientist who is seemingly forced against his will to help design the Death Star. While it seems inevitable that Galen will be the one to inform his daughter Jyn and her team of this structural weakness when they come to steal the Death Star plans, what if he is the one responsible for putting in that design flaw, in the hope that the Rebellion would one day discover it and destroy the Empire’s ultimate weapon? It would sure help explain why the Empire never noticed the issue and decided to, in the words of Darth Stewie Griffin from Family Guy: Blue Harvest, “board it up or put some plywood over it.”

We’ll find out for sure whether or not Galen Erso had anything to do with creating this Star Wars plot hole when Rogue One arrives Dec. 16th.
