Thirty-four years after doing battle at the Under-18 All-Valley Karate Tournament, Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence are back in the dojo for another round in the trailer for Cobra Kai, a YouTube Red spinoff series to the classic 1984 film The Karate Kid.
The series sees original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their roles as Daniel and Johnny, respectively, although it looks like Cobra Kai is going for a much different style and tone this time out.
The most striking thing about this trailer is that it seems like Zabka’s Johnny is the protagonist this time out. Down on his luck and publicly embarrassed by his former rival, who now owns a thriving car dealership, Johnny comes to the aid of a teenager being bullied by a group of students and is spurred to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo and become the teen’s sensai.
Of course, Daniel isn’t having any of it, stating “He thinks he can bring Cobra Kai back to the valley. Not on my watch,” despite the fact that Johnny looks like he’s just trying to help kids learn how to defend themselves and get some exercise in the process. I guess we’ll have to wait and see who’s the real hero and villain in all of this!
Written and executive produced by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, Cobra Kai will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 24 before premiering on YouTube Red on May 2.
