VENOM: Tom Hardy Reveals His Favorite Scenes Didn’t Make It Into The Movie

Source: Sony Pictures

Venom star Tom Hardy recently spoke with ComicsExplained, and showed a little remorse when talking about the scenes that didn’t end up in the final film.

Hardy stated:

“There are, like, 30 to 40 minutes’ worth of scenes that aren’t in this movie… all of them. Mad puppeteering scenes, dark comedy scenes. You know what I mean? They just never made it in.”

Many people are torn between wanting the film to be rated R to allow for some of the hardcore action that fans enjoyed so much in productions like Logan, while others are suggesting a PG-13 rating could help tie Venom into other PG-13 films, like a potential Spider-Man crossover.

Venom producer Avi Arad addressed recently addressed the rating issue, stating that producing an R-rated film was never a serious consideration. Instead, the intent from the start was to allow a younger audience to familiarize themselves with the character.

Another producer added, “There isn’t some phantom version of the movie. Everyone is asking us that. ‘Is there an R-rated cut sitting somewhere?’ There isn’t.”

Venom Ruben Fleischer also spoke on the topic, pointing to Christopher Nolan’s work on The Dark Knight as evidence that a dark and violent comic book movie can still be made with a PG-13 rating:

We only ever talked about this movie as being PG-13,” he said. “What I’ve said in the past is that we wanted to push the violence to the hilt. The Dark Knight was always a huge reference point for me, personally, just as far as how far you could take a PG-13 because that movie they put a pen through a guy’s forehead so I figure if you can do that in a PG-13 movie you can bite some heads off.”

We’ll see if the PG-13 gamble paid off when Venom opens in theaters on October 5th.
