Deepfake videos have been around for a while now, and although this new technology feels somewhat creepy and potentially dangerous, it doesn’t make this new form of synthetic media any less extraordinary.

A few weeks back, YouTuber EZRyderX47 shared an outstanding deepfake video from Back to the Future featuring Robert Downey Jr and Tom Holland. In the scene, Doc (Downey Jr.) and Marty (Holland) are discussing how they managed to time-travel back to the 1950s and why Marty’s mother has fallen in love with her own son. YIKES!

A few days after the video went viral, BBC Radio 1 caught up with Holland to discuss the upcoming release of Pixar’s Onward, which arrives in theatres on March 6, 2020. The actor was later asked if he’d seen the deepfake video and if he’d have any interest in Back to the Future remake and his answer might surprise you:

I’d be lying if I said there hadn’t been conversations in the past about doing some sort of remake, but that film is the most perfect film- or one of the most perfect films, one that could never be made better. That said, if [Robert Downey Jr.] and I could just shoot that one scene that they remade for fun – he could pay for it cause he’s got loads of money – I would do it for my fee and we could remake that scene. I think we owe it to deep fake because they did such a good job. … I think I’m gonna speak to Robert and see if we can try to recreate something for deep fake.

The thought of Back to the Future remake makes us a little queasy, but luckily for us, Zemeckis adamantly said during a 2015 interview with Vanity Fair that both he and Bob Gale have no plans of the making of remaking the iconic trilogy.

“Oh, God no. That can’t happen until both Bob and I are dead. And then I’m sure they’ll do it, unless there’s a way our estates can stop it.”

Does the thought of a Back to the Future remake make your skin crawl, or do you think it’s a good idea? Let us know in the comments below.
