Tom Hardy Is The Only Good Thing About The Underwhelming VENOM Trailer

Following a poster release yesterday and tease of “something else” to come today, Sony has released the first trailer for Venom. Based off the popular Marvel Comics character, the film stars Tom Hardy as the eponymous antihero/sometimes Spider-Man villain. Details about the movie, which is being helmed by Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, have been rather sparse so far and really, this trailer doesn’t really reveal much else beyond that it does indeed feature Venom as a character.

Shocking, right?

Now, this is a teaser trailer so it’s understandable that Sony wouldn’t want to give too much away about the film this early, but I’m honestly getting tired of superhero movie marketing treating character reveals like some big event that needs to be teased out over months. The trailer ends with Eddie Brock (Hardy) apparently turning into Venom, but we don’t actually get to see what the character looks like. And really, what other reason is there to tune into a Venom trailer than to see the hulking symbiote wreaking havoc?

If there’s one reason to look forward to Venom, it’s the film’s cast. Hardy alone is worth the price of admission but the supporting cast is also excellent, featuring the likes of Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, and Woody Harrelson.

Hopefully the next trailer does a better job of justifying this film’s existence. It hits theaters on October 5th. Will you be buying a ticket?
