Top Gun is a beloved ’80s movie featuring jet fighter dogfights and homoerotic volleyball scenes, but it’s also over 30 years old at this point, which begs the question: does it really need a sequel? Probably not, but Tom Cruise is ready to strap in and play Maverick once again. During an appearance on the Australian morning show Sunrise, where Cruise was on hand doing promotion for The Mummy reboot, he confirmed that Top Gun 2 is definitely happening and will start filming “in the next year.”

First, I feel like I just have to bring up how damn excited Cruise is about the whole thing, reiterating over and over that “it’s true,” to the show’s shocked hosts. Say what you will about the man’s personal life, but Cruise’s affability always comes off as completely genuine and he seems like he’d be a fun guy to interview.
Anyway, there have been Top Gun 2 rumors floating around for awhile now, with mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeting back in January 2016 that he and Cruise met on the set of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back to “discuss a little Top Gun.” Sadly, directing duties will have to go to someone other than the late Tony Scott, but it’s still possible to rope Val Kilmer back in to play Iceman (and frankly, they should just scrap Top Gun 2 altogether if they can’t get Kilmer to return).
It looks like this is really happening. Hopefully it will have been worth the wait!
