This Harry Potter Fan Theory May Just Blow Your Mind

With no new additions to the mainline Harry Potter series since The Deathly Hallows brought the Boy Who Lived’s story to a close in 2007, fans have kind of started going stir-crazy with crackpot theories and rampant fan fiction of dubious merit. That being said, from time-to-time something pretty interesting pops up.

Case in point: Tumblr user Jo Marie Walker has posted a theory that reinterprets the death of Harry’s loyal owl Hedwig and frames it in a way that makes one of the series’ best characters even better.

Walker argues that, in the tense escape sequence early on in The Deathly Hallows that sees Hedwig die at the hands of a random member of Voldemort’s Death Eater army, Hedwig is actually killed by none other than Severus Snape! Recognizing that Hedwig is like a big red flag identifying Harry from all the other Harry lookalikes (some of his allies assume his identity for a brief period, if you recall), Snape takes Harry’s owl out in order to throw Voldemort and his lackies off of Harry’s trail.

It’s a pretty convincing theory that doesn’t really change the core story, other than giving Hedwig’s death more meaning and making Snape even more awesome.

So…when does this become canon?

If you think that Walker’s theory has some merit, be sure to give the full thing a read here.
