Although Marvel Studios has yet to make any official announcement, Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn is confident there will be a third installment.
Speaking to Complex, Gunn said that “there will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out.”
Unless the upcoming GotG Vol. 2 completely bombs at the box office (which is extremely unlikely), it’s not exactly surprising to hear that Disney and Marvel would want to move forward with a third Guardians movie. While one would assume that most, if not all of the principal cast would return, Gunn himself isn’t so sure if he’ll return for a third outing. “I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else?”
Of course, Marvel will move forward with a Guardians sequel with or without Gunn, but the studio is likely eager to retain the writer/director given the critical and commercial success of the first installment. And even though GotG Vol. 3 is years away, fans won’t have to wait long to see Star-Lord, Gamora, and the rest of Guardians on screen again, as they will all appear in Avengers: Infinity War next year. Speaking of the latter film, Gunn made it clear that the Guardians won’t just be playing bit parts next to the Avengers.
“I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so the are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but an integral part to that.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released on May 5, 2017. In the meantime, why not watch the latest trailer again?
