It probably shouldn’t be a big surprise, but the combination of Disney and Dwayne Johnson is a force more powerful than the Thanksgiving weekend box office could possibly have imagined. The animated film Moana, starring The Rock alongside newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, brought in $81.1 million domestically and $97.4 million overall for its first weekend of release, making it the second-largest Thanksgiving opening weekend in history (behind another Disney animated classic, Frozen). Combined with Central Intelligence, which was a financial (if not critical) success, it’s been a very good 2016 for The Rock, and with multiple blockbuster films set to hit theaters next year, 2017 could be even better for the former WWE Champion.
